Meals

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day; it has been for decades. Those eggs! Sunnyside or poached, both succulent. And bacon! Wonderous, salty, chewy and juicy. Wow! And the toast of course, well buttered with the eggs, another slice with preserves, either strawberry or orange marmalade. Some potatoes would be nice, but fruit bits work just as well.

On our trip, breakfast was provided by all but one hotel. Even there it was a banquet of choice and delicious.

Lunch is a bit optional for me other than a snack or two. But when on the road, lunch provides a break and a taste of favorite things, too. A sandwich and a cup of soup is good; not filling but very tasty. Fries are not necessary, but they provide the crunch and salt often craved at any time of day. A full meal is not necessary, but a modest offering is a treat.

Dinner is wholly another thing. Such choice. Big or small, dinner is a chance for feasting. I love dinner. Roast beef, steak or prime rib. All sorts of potatoes, many with creams and sauces. Vegetables can be good but often not. Of course anything can be saved with a good sauce. Did I say I loved sauces? Spicey and filled with zest plus a little cream just makes the day.

The trip allowed us to visit restaurants three times per day. Each visit was a treat I always look forward to. Everyone has their own choice, and three people often mean three different plates of food. All look tempting. The smells! I guess I like eating, especially out. It is the choice you know; restaurants are all about choice.

On our way back to Chicago, we stayed in Amarillo. We found a Houlihan’s. I asked the waiter for something gushy and mushy. Saucy, soft and savory. He made a couple of suggestions. I chose one. Boy howdy was that good. Pasta with a clear sauce, spices and bits of chicken. So good my head never rose much above the plate.

On the road we sometimes snacked on potato chips and trail mix. A candy bar here and there helped some but not me. It’s not about sweet; it’s all about salt and crunch for me. Often these snacks avoided a stop for lunch. It all depended on when we had breakfast.

So, travel for me means visits and motion but also eating. Food is good. Choice and zest. Another opportunity for sauces, too. That first taste of a new dish does something for me. It makes all travel an adventure worth doing. I doubt I am alone with this feeling.
