Bits & Pieces
Diners: They are small. Many are cute. All share
common aromas of cooking food. The tinkle of glassware and clatter of
silverware is also a common attribute. A buxom greeter with broad smile and
greetings is also a shred characteristic.
Now the menu can be quite different from the many diners. All
day breakfasts are common and very welcome to this eater. But then a soup and
sandwich is a good lunch or early supper. It’s handy, cheap and fast. Especially
good when you are trying to manage time well. But dinners? At diners? That’s another
dimension to consider entirely. And I do mean dimension.
Is this a real dinner, with three or more items to sup? Or is
this a hot sandwich coated with gravy generously slopped over mashed potatoes
and slices of some meat or other? It’s
good, but often not truly tasty. It reminds you of food you like, but it doesn’t
rise to that level of taste. Not really. Hot yes. Filling, yes. But good? Not usually.
Now pasta dishes are good anytime I think. Lunch or dinner,
pasta and sauces are gooey and rich in taste. I’m a goner for them anytime on
any day.
Batteries: AAAs or Aas? Most electronics work with
these two battery sizes. Knowing when they are beginning to fail is just
another issue to deal with. Then, knowing how to access the battery to replace
it becomes an even larger mystery. Once that’s done, determining the proper
size to replace should be simple, but often it is not when faced with battery
selections in the store. What to get? I buy a little of everything to cover my
bases.
Then it’s home to once again open the device and slid the
right battery or batteries into the receptacle. Of course, which direction they
must go is not an option. Trial and error are once again a handy exercise,
hopefully with little frustration. Then it’s closing up the device and testing
whether it works or not. For some reason, this very simple task is much more
challenging than it was 40 years ago. Oh, I know; most of you aren’t even 40
yet, but you will be. Then you will capture the sense I am sharing with you
now. Just wait.
Dressy or Casual? I remember a day when chino’s were
acceptable at church. Worn at work was iffy, but church was OK. Then it wasn’t.
Now, anything goes, even flip flops.
But at 80+ years of age, try buying chino’s to fit the
waist, then take them to a tailor to adjust the cuffs and inseam. A lot easier
and expected to buy trousers and have them adjusted, but I’m just saying,
clothing options are more limited as age accumulates. Stretch pants and
sweatpants go only so far. I must admit, they go farther with me than most
would agree is appropriate. But then …
Shirts or tops pose very little trouble. So much easier is
the classification of casual and dressy. During COVID, sitting down in front of
the Zoom camera. Nice tops, even without a tie or suit jacket were often quite
acceptable. We only had to remember not to stand up! Shockers if we did. You know
what I’m talking about!!
