Elections last week gave proof that Americans are moving away from Trumpism to good old fashioned American democracy. The facts of today’s news are simple: the cost of living has risen under Trump, and the tariffs promise much more of the same. Inflation could easily reach 5% by mid-winter if the tariffs are not removed. Supply chain provides the dampened effect so far. Inventory being sold now was imported before tariffs were imposed. Just wait until after Christmas. Or during. 

Although gasoline has softened in price, the fact of the matter is oil barrel prices are $60 now while they were $110 back a year. Then we were paying 3.80 to 5.20 per gallon. At $60 per barrel, gas prices should be almost half the old pump price, say 1.80 to 2.40 per gallon. We are nowhere near that, so obviously gas retailers are ripping off the American public once again. Shameful.

I drive a hybrid and get about 50 miles per gallon. I also drive locally and very little. 50 miles per week is the norm. So, gas prices don’t matter much to me. But you? How about the cost of your commute?

War with Venezuela? Are you kidding? Boycott their products and battle them in other ways without violence. Attacking American immigrants who provide labor for so many goods and services in our land? Save them from all of this. Let farmers buy their services and harvest crops. Reduce tariffs and sell our produce to more global buyers.

So many foreign auto manufacturers have already built plants in the USA that are exempt from most of the tariffs. But American manufacturers still import a lot of parts from overseas and American brands are feeling the pain. Same with home appliances. And home building supplies. And energy including Canadian electric power.

The economy is reeling from instability and chaos. Dump MAGA and trump and just watch the recovery soar. Rebalance the separation of power among the three branches of the federal government and then note how much less power the presidency has. It has taken far too long for the judiciary to process the unconstitutionality of Trump’s assumption of powers. That will soon be rectified.

On the other hand, release the Epstein files and adjudicate Trump on his unconstitutional actions and remove him from office. He is more than a con man. He is a criminal and treasonous ass. Boot him out of office. Then put him in prison.

Bits & Pieces

Pie: Apple pie more specifically. With Thanksgiving just passed, many of us enjoyed a good apple pie. Sure, there was pumpkin to accompany the turkey, but in our family multiple pies are offered in the holidays. Apple is surely one. Pecan, pumpkin and others, too. But I almost always choose apple. When I was in college, I was asked what kind of pie did I eat most often. In front of my mom, I answered apple, because I was always looking for a pie as good as mom’s own. Of course my mother was pleased, but it was a true statement just the same. When I was married, Ann’s pie was darned good. Her mother’s recipe. But we fiddled with the recipe until it took on its own generational name, and boy, was it good! Remembering Tom Sherlock

Tom Sherlock died on Wednesday, April 3rd. He was 65 years old and did not survive a heart surgery. That was his unexpected end and sad enough. But there is more to his story. Tom joined Dan Schuyler and George Safford to create what became the Village Chronicles, a weekly newspaper serving Warrenville, Illinois. That paper expanded to serve Winfield and then West Chicago. The paper published for eight years and built a good reputation for itself. Tom served the paper in several ways. He was our information technology guru, provided hardware and software to support the paper's operations. He was our sole bookkeeper, accountant and financial manager. He designed our distribution process and provided office space for meetings and layout and typesetting. His efforts supported the work of 32 volunteers who wrote and reported on the communities we served.  The newspaper broke even financially most of the time, but it was a struggle.
