MAGA Blunders

Agriculture: International trading partners buy a lot of farm products from American farmers. Well, before current tariffs upturned the markets, American produce and meat were sold internationally. Now they are not. Markets have found replacement suppliers and our agricultural products are building in warehouses and siloes across the nation. They will rot if not sold. Crops for next year will be downsized. Unit costs for these same products will rise as supply downsizes, but in the meanwhile, a spate of product will cut pricing substantially and bring many farms to bankruptcy. There is no quick solution except to bail them out with enormous cash outlays. Such was promised in Trump’s first term but never fully paid out. Farmers took the brunt of that debacle and many went bankrupt then. No such high hope remains for such another payout currently. And there is no trust for it if it were promised. The damage is done. Agricultural markets are greatly damaged and spell disaster for family farms. Going back to the old markets is not likely to occur.

Beautiful Big Bill – Deficits: The net deficit from this bill is projected to be $2.7 trillion. Period. Not a surplus. Not even a close breakeven. The bill is a disaster in the making. It might bring about eventual desired changes, but not likely soon enough to avoid enormous, continuing deficits. The big promise is just another big Trump lie.

World Competitiveness: By reducing federally funded research and tinkering with the independence of universities, the true base of our nation’s competitiveness is severely damaged. Add to this the damage to agricultural markets, and competitiveness takes another huge hit. Restricting immigration cuts our population growth and flow of intellectual gifts. Another direct hit to competitiveness. In short, not much of Trump’s big bill or agenda does much to build international thirst for anything American. Reducing fraud and abuse? Those are word smithed terms not even documented or made worthy of judicial action. The trump agenda is empty. The only people getting wealthier are the Trumps and family, and already rich people. Corporations, too. But the trickledown economic theory of years past has long ago proved useless and ineffective.

In short, Trumpism is empty of positive results, now or ever. Time to put him in jail and guard our nation from treason.

Bits & Pieces

Pie: Apple pie more specifically. With Thanksgiving just passed, many of us enjoyed a good apple pie. Sure, there was pumpkin to accompany the turkey, but in our family multiple pies are offered in the holidays. Apple is surely one. Pecan, pumpkin and others, too. But I almost always choose apple. When I was in college, I was asked what kind of pie did I eat most often. In front of my mom, I answered apple, because I was always looking for a pie as good as mom’s own. Of course my mother was pleased, but it was a true statement just the same. When I was married, Ann’s pie was darned good. Her mother’s recipe. But we fiddled with the recipe until it took on its own generational name, and boy, was it good! Today I still order apple pie for dessert because I am always looking for a great pie to challenge our family recipes. I rarely do find such a prize. Do others do the same? Remembering Tom Sherlock

Tom Sherlock died on Wednesday, April 3rd. He was 65 years old and did not survive a heart surgery. That was his unexpected end and sad enough. But there is more to his story. Tom joined Dan Schuyler and George Safford to create what became the Village Chronicles, a weekly newspaper serving Warrenville, Illinois. That paper expanded to serve Winfield and then West Chicago. The paper published for eight years and built a good reputation for itself. Tom served the paper in several ways. He was our information technology guru, provided hardware and software to support the paper's operations. He was our sole bookkeeper, accountant and financial manager. He designed our distribution process and provided office space for meetings and layout and typesetting. His efforts supported the work of 32 volunteers who wrote and reported on the communities we served.  The newspaper broke even financially most of the time, but it was a struggle.
