Chaos

Supreme chaos. National guard called up to police Los Angeles due to riots caused by ICE picking up random Hispanics, as though their skin color and ethnicity is proof of illegal immigrant status. No foreknowledge. No investigation per individual. No process, legal or otherwise. Just street, appearance and goon behavior by ICE agents. And now the Marines added to the mix.

That’s the America we have become. That’s Trump’s America. MAGA’s America.

Just not my America.

In fact, today’s America is the exact opposite of my America.

Trump and his minions continue to declare a false narrative. False claims of January 6th. False claims regarding illegal aliens. False claims as to national emergency. False claims enabling executive orders. False claims of riots. False claims of massive illegal immigration and the so-called horrors they bring.

What immigrants bring is our forefathers. Yours and mine. My family was not an indigenous tribe of North America. We were straight from England. Our forefathers married other residents of the New World and remained of immigrant stock. Following this order of things, we are all of immigrant stock.

We all – each of us – brought talents and commitment to the new land. We learned what we needed to know in order to settle the land, build farms, buildings, homes, paths and roads, and finally government. We taught one another. We traded goods and services with one another until the commercial activity was large enough to form an economy. We created means of trading value and eventually minted coins and printed currency. We created the central bank of each state and finally of the new nation. We created money and banking laws. We created schools. We created local and regional governments. We created a central government to regulate and equalize treatment among all of us. We had due process from the Magna Carta and English Law. We duplicated it in the New World and made it American.

Over 250 years, we created great universities, enormous research engines, and commerce that reached every inch of the globe. We became a global partner of strength, purpose and human heart. We saved lives by sharing medical knowledge and services. We saved lives by feeding the hungry. We saved lives by helping stabilize weak governments. We shared our strengths so the global village would thrive. And it did.

But now? We are the laughingstock of the world. Accomplished in less than three months of the Trump regime. How sad. How very, very sad.

Indeed.

Bits & Pieces

Pie: Apple pie more specifically. With Thanksgiving just passed, many of us enjoyed a good apple pie. Sure, there was pumpkin to accompany the turkey, but in our family multiple pies are offered in the holidays. Apple is surely one. Pecan, pumpkin and others, too. But I almost always choose apple. When I was in college, I was asked what kind of pie did I eat most often. In front of my mom, I answered apple, because I was always looking for a pie as good as mom’s own. Of course my mother was pleased, but it was a true statement just the same. When I was married, Ann’s pie was darned good. Her mother’s recipe. But we fiddled with the recipe until it took on its own generational name, and boy, was it good! Today I still order apple pie for dessert because I am always looking for a great pie to challenge our family recipes. I rarely do find such a prize. Do others do the same? Remembering Tom Sherlock

Tom Sherlock died on Wednesday, April 3rd. He was 65 years old and did not survive a heart surgery. That was his unexpected end and sad enough. But there is more to his story. Tom joined Dan Schuyler and George Safford to create what became the Village Chronicles, a weekly newspaper serving Warrenville, Illinois. That paper expanded to serve Winfield and then West Chicago. The paper published for eight years and built a good reputation for itself. Tom served the paper in several ways. He was our information technology guru, provided hardware and software to support the paper's operations. He was our sole bookkeeper, accountant and financial manager. He designed our distribution process and provided office space for meetings and layout and typesetting. His efforts supported the work of 32 volunteers who wrote and reported on the communities we served.  The newspaper broke even financially most of the time, but it was a struggle.
