Mowing

Lawns being cut. Landscapes being changed. Transformations of homesites happening before our eyes. On YouTube. Everyday. Hours and hours of lawn mowing.

It’s fascinating. Alluring even. Something about orderliness? Something about simple logical actions making a difference? What is it about these hours of TV viewing that attract so much attention? My attention.

I stumbled on these YouTube videos one day several weeks ago. I’ve been drawn to them daily ever since. I know I am not the only one, else they wouldn’t be readily available to watch. Are you watching them as well? Is this a male thing? Or is it of interest to both genders?

I have not talked with my son about this yet. I think he will be interested, but somehow, I don’t think he will have heard of them yet. Or even watched them. We have shared the thought that mowing a lawn is somehow very satisfying.

In my homeowning days when yard work was an ever-present demand, I dreaded the time demand to do the work, even some of the work on a hot and humid day, but still, I experienced satisfaction about the work that I did and wouldn’t have admitted then. I do now. Why I do, remains a mystery.

It may be the orderliness of the activity that attracts. Perhaps it is bringing beauty out of ugliness? Well, my yard never was truly ugly, messy, maybe, but not ugly. A freshly mown lawn looks good. The edges crisp and tidy. Bushes neatly trimmed to maximize their appearance. Flowers evident to add their dash of color and texture. A balance to the landscape. A backdrop or frame to the house itself that brings a pleasant view.

The YouTube videos usually are provided free to the property owner because they are too old, disabled or poor to do the work. Many times, the work is done on abandoned properties that detract from the neighborhood’s appearance and value. Whatever, the jobs begin with heavily overgrown landscapes and badly maintained ones to boot. Pulling those sites back to presentable is a pleasure to watch. It is to me at any rate. I suspect to many others, too.

I write about this topic to bring attention to more of you that lawn mowing is a thing on YouTube in case you haven’t noticed. Also, I wonder if I could get some feedback letting me know that I am not alone in appreciating these videos. Understanding why is another matter we can take up another time!
