Resist

I do not agree with current White House governance. Period. It is un-American. It goes against our entire history. This is not who we are.

On top of that, I unconsciously built a career on helping people. Later I realized what I had done and internally celebrated my life mattered to countless people. My career efforts and those of my colleagues, mattered. Still matters. The beat of our accomplishments goes on and on through many generations.

Not doing what we did, undoing what we did, is simply not possible. Therefore, we and others need to continue doing all these things. This is a form of resistance to the Trumpism of 2025.

Another form of resistance is to avow not voting for anyone who is or appears to be supportive of the Trump mindset. MAGA assumes America is not great. I disagree with that. We are pretty damn good. We have problems that need fixing. A clumsy, slow and awkward court system is one such example. It is salvageable. It has to be, or our tripartite form of government is dead.

Congress is another problem needing repair. Thank God the House of Representatives is elected every two years. We have an opportunity to dump anyone who doesn’t do his/her job representing their constituents. We must hold them to our standards of representation, also, their oath of office.  Perform or begone.

Same with the executive branch. The president is elected to serve and to follow his/her oath of office. Bipartisan approval of appointments is one of the protocols of the job. We The People must be properly represented. If not, out of office in the next election. Not able to run for another office, impeachment is the next best thing. It ought to have a hair trigger so the incumbent is aware of being monitored constantly.

These are all forms of resistance. We do not all have to march in the streets. I can’t. I use a walker. But I can resist in many other ways. Ways that matter. Like writing and publishing a blog. Like voting for other like-minded candidates. Like volunteering for nonprofits. Like educating and training/mentoring younger people and entrepreneurs and nonprofits. These are all potent forms of resistance.

Real patriots understand all of this. I am certain we outnumber those who call themselves MAGA patriots. It’s our job to make sure this is true.

Bits & Pieces

Pie: Apple pie more specifically. With Thanksgiving just passed, many of us enjoyed a good apple pie. Sure, there was pumpkin to accompany the turkey, but in our family multiple pies are offered in the holidays. Apple is surely one. Pecan, pumpkin and others, too. But I almost always choose apple. When I was in college, I was asked what kind of pie did I eat most often. In front of my mom, I answered apple, because I was always looking for a pie as good as mom’s own. Of course my mother was pleased, but it was a true statement just the same. When I was married, Ann’s pie was darned good. Her mother’s recipe. But we fiddled with the recipe until it took on its own generational name, and boy, was it good! Remembering Tom Sherlock

Tom Sherlock died on Wednesday, April 3rd. He was 65 years old and did not survive a heart surgery. That was his unexpected end and sad enough. But there is more to his story. Tom joined Dan Schuyler and George Safford to create what became the Village Chronicles, a weekly newspaper serving Warrenville, Illinois. That paper expanded to serve Winfield and then West Chicago. The paper published for eight years and built a good reputation for itself. Tom served the paper in several ways. He was our information technology guru, provided hardware and software to support the paper's operations. He was our sole bookkeeper, accountant and financial manager. He designed our distribution process and provided office space for meetings and layout and typesetting. His efforts supported the work of 32 volunteers who wrote and reported on the communities we served.  The newspaper broke even financially most of the time, but it was a struggle.
