Ukraine: An ally of America and the free world, upending its defense so Russia can control it, is a terrible outcome. And America makes this happen by rebuking its agreement to help Ukraine survive Russia’s invasion twice. If we allow this to happen, the history of our nation will be forever stained.

Ukraine is the perfect buffer between the communist world and the free world. They share such a history and belong as that important buffer. It is up to Europe and the US to save Ukraine. That needs to happen now. Today.

Trumpers: These people who supported Trump’s bare election victory, wonder why the rest of the country thinks of them as stupid. Five weeks into his presidency, Trump has proven why his vision of the nation and world is wrong. Five weeks. Record time to undo more than 250 years of American history. Trumpers focused on the wrong things to vote for. The rest of us understood the larger vision and the damage he could do to that. And we were right.

Clarity of that statement is why Trumpers are thought to be stupid. Get it now?

Economics: When Biden left office, he had led the economy back to health from the damage imposed by both COVID and Trump. COVID alone provided the opportunity for massive change waiting in the wings. Major new industries ached to be born. Old industries hung on but knew that their futures were ebbing and would downsize significantly or disappear entirely. Such change usually takes time to manifest, but COVID forced rapid change. The nation learned that much of its labor could work remotely and perform admirably. Major investments in office space were not as necessary as before COVID, and commuting became expendable for many.

Employment revved up under Biden’s leadership, international trade changed greatly, and the global role of America was enhanced. Technology advanced and was integrated greatly with the rest of the economy, boosting productivity.

Disinformation and international interference from Russia and other foreign nations distorted American politics and provided a bare minimum victory for Trump’s election to the presidency. Since then, Trump has done much to turn the economy upside-down. The debacle is on Trump and Maga Republicans.

Pie: Apple pie more specifically. With Thanksgiving just passed, many of us enjoyed a good apple pie. Sure, there was pumpkin to accompany the turkey, but in our family multiple pies are offered in the holidays. Apple is surely one. Pecan, pumpkin and others, too. But I almost always choose apple. When I was in college, I was asked what kind of pie did I eat most often. In front of my mom, I answered apple, because I was always looking for a pie as good as mom’s own. Of course my mother was pleased, but it was a true statement just the same. When I was married, Ann’s pie was darned good. Her mother’s recipe. But we fiddled with the recipe until it took on its own generational name, and boy, was it good! Remembering Tom Sherlock

Tom Sherlock died on Wednesday, April 3rd. He was 65 years old and did not survive a heart surgery. That was his unexpected end and sad enough. But there is more to his story. Tom joined Dan Schuyler and George Safford to create what became the Village Chronicles, a weekly newspaper serving Warrenville, Illinois. That paper expanded to serve Winfield and then West Chicago. The paper published for eight years and built a good reputation for itself. Tom served the paper in several ways. He was our information technology guru, provided hardware and software to support the paper's operations. He was our sole bookkeeper, accountant and financial manager. He designed our distribution process and provided office space for meetings and layout and typesetting. His efforts supported the work of 32 volunteers who wrote and reported on the communities we served.  The newspaper broke even financially most of the time, but it was a struggle.
