Moving Part 3
Stuttering progress throughout this project. First was negotiating which apartment I would move to in the same building. Second was defining the best start date for the new lease. Early moving in activity was approved for January 26 but the keys were not available to me until noon of January 27. Frantic moving trips were conducted for the next 1.5 days. Then the lease papers were written for the wrong date, and it looked like I was occupying both apartments simultaneously, so another rent payment (double) was needed. I said no and they rewrote the lease to solve the problem. Then on Wednesday I tried entering the new apartment with a fresh load of stuff and my keys would not work. They had changed the locks. This is OK; what is not OK, is not getting the new keys to me personally.
On Tuesday I opened my new mailbox and found it stuffed with
mail for the previous tenant. That was sorted by the leasing agent. I decided
to check the garage storage room for my apartment to make sure it was empty for
my things to be moved in. Couldn’t do this because now I did not have the right
keys.
Progress: walk in pantry is cleaned out; two closets are now
empty. One bathroom is empty. The second bathroom is nearly empty, but I have
use it until Friday afternoon. Utility closet needs to be emptied. The kitchen
has surplus stuff tossed out. All the food, pots and pans and dishware/glasses
have to be boxed and moved. I planned on doing that today but can’t until I
have keys. That leaves the office and living/dining room. The latter will be
moved by professionals on Saturday, as well as some of the office. The little
stuff I will move bit by bit to the new unit.
You can see a lot of time, work and thought has gone into
this. Friends and family have supplied much labor. I cannot do this alone,
especially at my age. But it is getting done.
Barriers to successful process lies with the leasing
company. Still, I think we will be done by Friday evening. Then the settling
process begins. Where do the wall art items go? Where will all furniture be
situated. Bits and pieces to be sure, but these are the details of settling into
a new home. Probably weeks will be needed. But first naps, food, and empty
relaxation.
I’m looking forward to all of that.
(Note: I am in the new apartment as I write this today, but will bring you up to date on the rest Wednesday.)
