End of Year 2024

Happy New Year. May 2025 be a better year, one filled with invention, discovery and forward thinking, thinking that lifts people rather than dashing them.

I know that changing White House leadership is a change jarring to some, it does not spell upheaval to all. Our form of government is designed to thwart those who would upend the government’s structure and safety. The government will be challenged by ‘leaders’ who think they have power to do whatever, but they don’t. That is a simple point of fact.

There will be pushback on most efforts to change government policy. Tariffs is only one area of massive disagreement. International relations are another. Canada and Mexico are our largest training partners. They will not easily yield to policies that are unfair and unfriendly. Their pushback will threaten America’s economic stability and cost us much too much. Power partnerships with these two nations are also threatened. I doubt we will feel comfortable with how Mexico and Canada’s UN practices will affect our interests abroad.

Threatening Social Security is a nonstarter. Citizens will make that decision felt. No elected official will be able to stop what we all think and feel about Social Security. The same goes for Medicare. This program has made healthcare more accessible and fairer to all of us. Quality care has been improved at the same time. None of these benefits would have happened if it weren’t for Medicare.

Social safety nets are the outcomes of what government should be all about: protection of its citizens and ensuring a stronger quality of life. Chipping away at that safety net is another nonstarter. Redefining government as an economic engine for the wealthy will not work.

2025 will be the year elected officials get the message. Our government belongs to all of us, each of us. It must be fair for all of us. That includes the court system, all of the judiciary and its operations, the legislative branch in the main, and all of the executive branch. None of those branches are a power unto themselves. They act together for the common good of the people, or they will fail separately one by one.

We the People have the word, first, last and always. Threaten us too much and watch out! Power to the people is what the Declaration of Independence is all about, and ditto for the US Constitution. I think the MAGA fans have mistaken their understanding of our nation’s roots and governance. In time they will come to understand the errors of their way.

Meanwhile, chaos will attempt to control and distract. It is up to the rest of us to make that have no meaningful outcome.
