Creative Genius
These are a few random stories about my SCORE clients. The information is confidential so no identifying data will be shared. I just want to share with you what many of the clients think about, and what they do.
I specialize in nonprofit organizations. That is pretty much
the primary business sector I worked in for most of 55 years. That sector not
only produces more than 15% of all economic activity in the country, but it
also represents a major market for other for-profit businesses. The two work together to produce some stunning economic results.
Of more importance, however, are the missions of these
entities. They are not about earning money or building vast net incomes. This is
not about wealth of the organization, either. It is all about improving living conditions for specific groups of people.
Many of my clients address problems experienced by single
mothers, children from broken or dysfunctional homes. One client addresses the
problems of kids in the foster home system and how to better prepare them for living
on their own at the tender age of 18. Most emancipated kids are totally
unprepared for finding a home, paying rent, getting a job or continuing their education.
They don’t know how to pay taxes, acquire transportation and financially manage
their affairs. My client has a method to address all of those
problems.
Many clients struggle with effective fundraising to build revenue streams strong enough to operate successfully. Acquiring the
financial means to function in their chosen area of charity is a major challenge
for them.
So is recruiting willing people to work diligently and share
their expertise in running the organization. All too many clients find
themselves doing everything themselves. My advice is always to recruit like- minded people to help run the business. The mission is key in attracting
support for everything: money, volunteers and leadership. These all emanate from the
mission. It is the primary attraction.
Most of my clients ache to improve the world. They have a
clear vision of how the world should operate. They realize it doesn’t, but they
are willing to work at changing that. Their dedication is amazing and
contagious. Although managing debits and credits is very important, supporting
the mission of what can be is life changing. Teaching them how to live in the
real world of finance and business is my job. That is teachable. Finding, loving
and fueling successful missions cannot be taught. Just supported. And nurtured.
That is what I do every day in SCORE.
