Labor Day 2022

Interesting arc of change regarding labor in the USA. New business formations are up significantly reports the Small Business Administration. SCORE.org is a volunteer agency once a part of the SBA. SCORE provides free mentoring to entrepreneurs wanting to start their own businesses and helps existing small businesses to weather challenges so they can survive and thrive.

SCORE’s national cadre of volunteers number more than 11,000. They do all of their work for free. These people are mostly retired from either their own businesses (founded, owned and operated by them) or from the executive suites of larger corporations. Mentoring is not consulting, but rather guidance, heart to heart talking through problems and complex options.

SCORE National has the data but roughly 140,000 new jobs were created in 2021. That number should be equaled or exceeded in 2022. If they thrive, these jobs will multiply handsomely over the next five years. This is why SCORE does what it does. Now, other than SCORE, the SBA is ready to help in a similar fashion, but they normally get involved with more detailed and heady projects. They also help with funding small businesses.

Then there are the Small Business Development Centers located in countless community colleges all over the USA. They help with training, development of small business personnel, as well as guiding clients through complicated government contracting applications.

Similar to SBDCs, WBDCs focus on helping women start and develop their own businesses.

America invests in small businesses because this is where job creation begins.

In good times and bad, entrepreneurs fight against the odds to live the dream of owning their own business. The COVID Pandemic proved to be a stunning case in point. Early pandemic months witnessed a huge increase in startup businesses. That trend continued throughout most of the pandemic. American entrepreneurs are hardy risk takers. They are inventive and innovators to their core.

I’ve been a SCORE mentor for 8 years and still going strong. Fascinating work and very motivating. Clients brighten my days with fresh new ideas and an energy and creativity that stuns me. America is alive with these people. Perhaps you are one of them?

Labor Day 2022 is one day in a complicated world of economics and commercial relationships. Bad times are often the genesis of good times. And, in good times the genesis accelerates the possible. Know this current of activity is alive and well in America.

Bits & Pieces

Pie: Apple pie more specifically. With Thanksgiving just passed, many of us enjoyed a good apple pie. Sure, there was pumpkin to accompany the turkey, but in our family multiple pies are offered in the holidays. Apple is surely one. Pecan, pumpkin and others, too. But I almost always choose apple. When I was in college, I was asked what kind of pie did I eat most often. In front of my mom, I answered apple, because I was always looking for a pie as good as mom’s own. Of course my mother was pleased, but it was a true statement just the same. When I was married, Ann’s pie was darned good. Her mother’s recipe. But we fiddled with the recipe until it took on its own generational name, and boy, was it good! Today I still order apple pie for dessert because I am always looking for a great pie to challenge our family recipes. I rarely do find such a prize. Do others do the same? Remembering Tom Sherlock

Tom Sherlock died on Wednesday, April 3rd. He was 65 years old and did not survive a heart surgery. That was his unexpected end and sad enough. But there is more to his story. Tom joined Dan Schuyler and George Safford to create what became the Village Chronicles, a weekly newspaper serving Warrenville, Illinois. That paper expanded to serve Winfield and then West Chicago. The paper published for eight years and built a good reputation for itself. Tom served the paper in several ways. He was our information technology guru, provided hardware and software to support the paper's operations. He was our sole bookkeeper, accountant and financial manager. He designed our distribution process and provided office space for meetings and layout and typesetting. His efforts supported the work of 32 volunteers who wrote and reported on the communities we served.  The newspaper broke even financially most of the time, but it was a struggle.
