Bits and Pieces

Swelling Public Illness: Flu and COVID infections are on the rise. Both are public enemies. We have steadfastly sought out appropriate vaccinations and advisory actions. We follow them. Got the flu only once while a recipient of the vaccine. So far, no COVID. Both of my kids’ families have had COVID. One family has suffered through it twice. They are inoculated and vaccinated. Still, they got it although all mild cases. We, on the other hand, restrict our activity, wear masks and protect ourselves and others.

It would be better for all if we used our heads and wore masks. Heck, I haven’t even had an allergy reaction to pollens for over 2 years. The masks work.

Disbelief Among Public: Now that much more is being learned about the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, conservatives and republicans are denying the facts and making big noise about injustice. They should talk!

The justice system will determine what is fact, what is relevant, and what is actionable. I will gladly wait for the outcomes. Meanwhile, I will distrust those who conveniently maintain a system they now profess to distrust. Yet they remain in our halls of government. Running it or mucking it up?

Believing an Auto Dealer: At first, I learned of the safety recall from news coverage. Later the internet provided more information and background. Eventually the letter came in the mail. My car was recalled due to a potential catastrophic failure of the braking system.

The language was dire. Possible complete failure of brakes could lead to enormous injury, possible death and property damage. The make of the cars included were Mercedes-Benz. Four model classes were involved. Model years spanned 2006 to 2012. Mine is an old 2006 R-Class 500, a station wagon model big enough to carry our walkers and mobility equipment. The car is an antique but solid and working without the benefit of an auto loan.

I delayed responding to the recall because word was out that a mandatory tow to the dealerships was considered. Parts were scarce and loaner cars even scarcer. I did not want to be without a car. I was certain that our freedom and mobility was at stake.

Yesterday I finally took the car in. They could not have been nicer. They marveled at my antique. They analyzed and fixed the issue. The car is now certified safe, no delays were encountered. Time elapsed was 1 hour including the car wash! No costs were incurred.

I spent the time reading in the posh waiting room, then drove home with confidence. Freedom intact.
