Freedom Losses

They keep mounting. Freedoms lost so others can exercise their freedoms. The haves and have nots, played in another key. Let’s make a list.

1.       Women’s choice to live in their own bodies fully, to have kids or not; to engage in sex or not; to abort a fetus when practical (health, finances, mental health, fetus health and/or disability; many others)

2.       Freedom from violence so others can own and use guns as they see fit; oh yes, there are laws to the contrary, but they are gutless and unenforceable intentionally

3.       Reading the books that matter to you because ideologues think you cannot handle the content; they know it well enough to ban it? How did that come to be? Why is a book OK in one era but not in a later one, or vice versa?

4.       Clothing choices in schools. School boards censor what kids wear, how they wear their hair, and so forth. How come these school boards have enough time to engage in this nonsense?

5.       State governments usurping personal freedoms when these are the very governments who conservatively believe government is too invasive already? Huh?

6.       Freedom to vote. Legislatures are mandating fewer polling places, more ballot restrictions, difficult timelines for voting, inhuman restrictions on waiting lines (no water or food), etc. How did we get to this place when we say everyone should vote and we should make it easy to do so to encourage participation in the democratic process?

7.       Inclusion choices. One government encourages our diversity and inclusion while others specifically deny it. How did this come about?

I’ll stop there. The stark reality of group think has run amok for all to see. Is it high time for the return of commonsense?

How about right now?
