Fix Gun Issue Now

Old tired excuses and arguments about why guns are not the problem. Well, sorry, those words do not work anymore. Americans are finally fed up.

When the Constitution was written, no standing armies or military forces were existing. Regional militias were pulled together from private citizens, each providing their own firearm and ammunition. Today, we spend nearly $800 billion annually on military personnel, equipment and landed installations. International installations are included with all of this. The actual cost is much larger due to ongoing research, development and equipment improvements. We probably spend more than a trillion dollars on military matters. This does not include black operations known only to a few in the CIA, Congress and White House.

In some sense we still have militias, but we call them National Guard units centered in each state of the union. However, those guard units come with nationally provided ammunition, firearms and other necessary support equipment at federal government expense.

We are no longer a nation of regional militias. The ones existing today in name only are actually private militias organized to pursue a political ideology. They are loose cannon on the political landscape and need to be abolished. Some are the core of domestic terrorist groups.

Possible solutions:

First, assault rifles should only be owned by units of government supporting their national guard units, state police, city and county police and of course the five military branches. That’s it. No private ownership of assault rifles should be allowed.

Second, all gun ownership should require background checks, waiting period, and proof of physical and mental health stability. The guns should be individually registered to the primary owner

Third, step 2 should be repeated annually.

Fourth, liability insurance is required for each and every weapon.

Fifth, a tax of 15% on all ammunition sales will be levied upon sale to fund administration and enforcement of the above gun controls.

Sixth, all previous gun regulations shall be revoked to simplify enforcement of the new regulations.

Seventh, gun and ammunition manufacturers are required to fund research on gun safety and causes of gun violence. This subject of research shall be progressively documented to become a formal field of graduate, academic study in the field of criminal justice.

The above is the least we can do to honor the victims of gun violence. When is not on the table. The time is NOW.
