GOP Freedom Party?

Questions! We have Questions!

It seems unthinkable that the party of personal freedom and Red, White and Blue, is showing other colors of restricted freedom. Laws against women controlling their own bodies is once again in play. Abortion bans are appearing in Republican strongholds. Blocking free speech in Florida (Don’t Say Gay legislation) complete with hideously overplayed consequences levied against the state’s largest private employer, is in full view. Once again telling teachers how to do their job by people who have no clue on how to teach in the first place, are driving legislation in GOP led regions of the nation.

I guess we are to suppose that only men know what to do with their penis without regulation. That teachers can do their job within legal restrictions only with duct tape firmly planted across their mouths.

It is a wonder any children are born in this climate. It is another wonder that we even attract teachers to the profession in the first place. What will be the long-term effects of the Republican witch hunt for morals and priggishness? Are we all supposed to retire to life in our closets with the doors firmly shut? Or is legislation brewing to tear down even the closet door?

If we allow abortion to be outlawed, one effect is unwanted babies becoming wards of all the states at enormous cost. Is that really what we want? Is that what the GOP wants? Really?

We had this discussion in the 50’s and 60’s. The abortion question was settled law from that time forward. Now we are being thrown back in time when back-alley abortions killed countless women and their fetuses. Is that what we want for our sisters and mothers? Is that the kind of nation we want for ourselves and children?

I don’t think so. If you think social services cost a lot today, just imagine the fallout 15 years from now. You haven’t seen anything yet!

Why don't we regulate men and their bodies?

Bits & Pieces

Pie: Apple pie more specifically. With Thanksgiving just passed, many of us enjoyed a good apple pie. Sure, there was pumpkin to accompany the turkey, but in our family multiple pies are offered in the holidays. Apple is surely one. Pecan, pumpkin and others, too. But I almost always choose apple. When I was in college, I was asked what kind of pie did I eat most often. In front of my mom, I answered apple, because I was always looking for a pie as good as mom’s own. Of course my mother was pleased, but it was a true statement just the same. When I was married, Ann’s pie was darned good. Her mother’s recipe. But we fiddled with the recipe until it took on its own generational name, and boy, was it good! Today I still order apple pie for dessert because I am always looking for a great pie to challenge our family recipes. I rarely do find such a prize. Do others do the same? Remembering Tom Sherlock

Tom Sherlock died on Wednesday, April 3rd. He was 65 years old and did not survive a heart surgery. That was his unexpected end and sad enough. But there is more to his story. Tom joined Dan Schuyler and George Safford to create what became the Village Chronicles, a weekly newspaper serving Warrenville, Illinois. That paper expanded to serve Winfield and then West Chicago. The paper published for eight years and built a good reputation for itself. Tom served the paper in several ways. He was our information technology guru, provided hardware and software to support the paper's operations. He was our sole bookkeeper, accountant and financial manager. He designed our distribution process and provided office space for meetings and layout and typesetting. His efforts supported the work of 32 volunteers who wrote and reported on the communities we served.  The newspaper broke even financially most of the time, but it was a struggle.
