Auto Industry

At your next stop light, look at the nearest six cars, including your own, and count how many are foreign makes. I’ll hazard at least 4 of them are foreign. Most of the time I count 5 or all six.

This raises the question: when did America stop being the auto maker of choice?

America still builds more cars than any other nation, but I suspect the majority of American households now buy more foreign makes than domestic.

I personally have found better quality vehicles from foreign brands. Innovation is another aspect of non-domestic makers. Sheer volume of product does not prove the value of the industry in our home country.

I have long been ashamed of American automobiles. They once were the standard to envy the world over. Not any more.

I think it started with the VW Beetles. But Mercedes, BMW and Audi delivered killer strokes to the American market long ago. Japan stole most of the market before that, and it continues so.

I wonder if American auto brands will understand this in time to save its own industry. The last 40 years suggests they won’t.
