Bits & Pieces
Netanyahu: This is a fellow who is indicted. Being president
of Israel keeps the prosecution suspended. Otherwise he would likely be found
guilty and imprisoned. To avoid that outcome, Netanyahu creates fear and war. He
keeps his job. He avoids prosecution.
So, he attacks Iran. He attacks Lebanon. He attacks the Gaza
strip. He mucks around in Palestinian spaces building walls, houses, and
Israeli communities. He does everything to foment violence, not peace. He does
so with impunity and does not cooperate with allies. He cannot be trusted to
serve any purpose other than his own.
The Israelis should understand this by now. He is trouble. He
needs to be fired. Let the court system handle him.
Meanwhile, the world community could focus on building peace
in the volatile Mid-East. That is long overdue. With two clowns – Trump and Netanyahu
– actively stirring up trouble, peace hasn’t a chance.
Power Assumed: I have a friend from college years who
claims Trump has more power to exercise than the public imagines. Most presidents
have not exercised this power but it is still there to be used. I demurred from
this point of view.
The American people have the power he insists the president
has. Actually, the power exists but with the people. It is up to us to use it. It
is done most effectively at election time. Of course, who we vote for follows
serious, in-depth study of the issues so we vote intelligently. Too often the
homework simply is not done.
Our nation’s current situation demonstrates the power of the
courts. It took them some time to get the roles right, but they are
consistently stepping up to thwart the Trumpettes. The rank-and-file staff
working throughout the federal bureaucracy are stepping up as well. Even some cabinet
members are failing to act as Trump wants them to.
Power has its limits. Sometimes it is in writing. Much of
the time it is something felt. And that is what is carrying the day lately. It will
continue to do so because the American people have had enough of you know who.
Bears Stadium: The Bears have not been a consistent
performer of note for years. Yet the city has fought to retain them, built
stadiums for them, subsidized their business plan and generally fallen prey to
the Bears’ corporate hustle. Taxpayers paid the bill. Substantial bills.
I think it is time to say no to this. Too many cities are paying
professional sports teams to remain in their communities for status, bragging
rights, or whatever else is not worth the cost. Taxpayers deserve better
protection. Cities need to use those funds for services to people who need help.
If the Bears move to Arlington Heights, they will still be
known as the Chicago Bears. If they move to Gary, Indiana, they will retain the
Chicago Bears moniker. Taxpayers need not subsidize sports teams. They should
be self-supporting or they are not good managers. If they want support from the
public, they must earn it. In pro sports that means winning games and building
a history of excellence. Is there any evidence of that?
No. I thought so. Go fund your own sports facilities, Bears.
