New Computer

In a flash computer apps spring to life. I touch one key and the computer screens come alive after a night of sleep. No booting or re-booting. Just action. Screens with options to choose. Screen shots alive with detail and color and selection. Amazing. My IT engineer told me so. All I had to do was dump the Lenovo and buy a new computer.

I did. A Dell all-in-one. 27-inch screen. Drives my curved 24-inch screen next to it. Two screens large enough to see. Both touch controlled. A table top filled with computer equipment that works. How about that?

Of course, people ask why. At 83, why would I replace my computer? What do I have to do or say that warrants such an expense? Why indeed.

With a new machine capable of much, I now have the tool to create something more than I have already done. What will that be?

I have often advised family and friends that retirement must be to something, not just idleness. You know the stories of those who retired with nothing to do, and they simply became couch potatoes and died within six months of retiring. Well, having something to do is one thing, having the tools to do it is another.

A life lived is one with experience and things learned. Putting them together is a process that builds wisdom. Not always perfect, but something yet again to learn from. Wisdom and perspective. Viewpoints that may help understand the larger world. Sharing all of that somehow helps others do the same.

So, some of us write blogs. Others write books. Still others write plays, poetry and a host of other art that helps all of us think more thoroughly. Communication takes many forms and contains much information. All of this takes our own thinking to determine the worth and meaning of it all. That’s a challenge that never fades.

So here it is with me. Whatever will I do with the new computer? More blogs or something else? Give me time and we both will see. I just hope it is worth the effort. Well, at least the effort keeps me functioning. Hopefully the brain does the same, with value?

Pie: Apple pie more specifically. With Thanksgiving just passed, many of us enjoyed a good apple pie. Sure, there was pumpkin to accompany the turkey, but in our family multiple pies are offered in the holidays. Apple is surely one. Pecan, pumpkin and others, too. But I almost always choose apple. Remembering Tom Sherlock

Tom Sherlock died on Wednesday, April 3rd. He was 65 years old and did not survive a heart surgery. That was his unexpected end and sad enough. But there is more to his story. Tom joined Dan Schuyler and George Safford to create what became the Village Chronicles, a weekly newspaper serving Warrenville, Illinois. That paper expanded to serve Winfield and then West Chicago. The paper published for eight years and built a good reputation for itself. Tom served the paper in several ways. He was our information technology guru, provided hardware and software to support the paper's operations. He was our sole bookkeeper, accountant and financial manager. He designed our distribution process and provided office space for meetings and layout and typesetting. His efforts supported the work of 32 volunteers who wrote and reported on the communities we served.  The newspaper broke even financially most of the time, but it was a struggle. Places

We live in a place. We work in a place. Most of these places are separate from each other. You and I were born in a specific town, another place. We assign value to these places being special to our lives. Perhaps that value is large; maybe small; but it holds a special place in our minds. I was born in Pasadena, California. I knew that city a bit; not a lot; but our church was there, my doctor was there, the family car was bought in a dealership in Pasadena, and so forth. We lived, however, in Altadena, a suburb immediately north of Pasadena and butting up against the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. We looked up from our backyard to the Mount Wilson Observatory. We shopped locally, went to school in Altadena schools, and had a lot of friends and neighbors in Altadena. Now Altadena is a place in my mind; it was home for many years. It is long remembered and special to me.
