Current Events
Today’s post is in the now. Posting right after writing it. Usually, I write the piece a day or two in advance. That gives me time to edit and proof the item before publishing to the internet.
Topics normally pop to mind, and I write about that in the
present. Today, this did not happen. So many topics rummaged through my mind
that I could not decide on which to cover.
My thinking covers these current subjects: political
division in the USA over conservative and liberal; China’s role in the future
of world history; American elections in 2024 and their likely outcome; weather
extremes and how we adapt to them; making sense out of myriad topics as they
impact our day to day lives; and many others. Each of these is good for several
posts, at any time, but today the focus isn’t right.
So, what to do? Well, I have chosen to just ponder the
former paragraph. Notice how complicated life is. Rarely do we manage one topic
without a context of many others. Each fight for attention. Some are before
their time; others are late arriving on the to-do list. Together they have
impact and must be handled. Our society is blessed with many actors ready to
manage specific topics expertly. They usually do their work, and we eke out
another day, watching each topic morph its way to society’s attention.
This is history being lived by each moment, unfurling as it
goes. Meaning and impact grow and ebb accordingly. Each topic gets attention at
the right time or not. Too early and time and effort are wasted. Too late and
the damage is done, and adjustments are made to live with that. Over time we
encounter the topics with more attention and revise the importance of each. Thus,
history is adjusted as our understanding changes. It is not rewriting history;
it is amending our account of history based on more facts being known and valued
accordingly.
Difference of opinion matters. Discussion about those
opinions help everyone better understand the issues. We tinker with our
knowledge, our understanding, and our conclusions. We also determine when
action is needed on the specific issue. In this manner public policy and action
is conjured and prepared. It is not an overnight reaction to short-term
stimuli. Our social order invests time and thought into these matters. Discussion
helps the process along. The process is needed even if the doing of it is
unpleasant and leads to more discord.
Compromise on action becomes the solutions pursued. This takes
time to get right. Often the action is not right, and changes must be noted and
then adopted. This is a messy enterprise. It is not clear cut most of the time.
Even then disagreement continues until the issue is laid to rest or becomes too
trite to bother with.
Current events are what we are dealing with. Daily news is
how we keep informed. Discussion is the method used to craft actionable steps. Political
action in government agencies is where the action is implemented. In the next
few seconds our minds move on to other issues. The context of current events is
ever present. It is a rich compounding of issues, each of which deserve our
attention. The process to do just that will happen, just not as we may wish it
to do.
Patience and clarity of thinking is required. These do not
come easily. Needed just the same.
