Memorial Day
A day to remember all our fallen military personnel who have fought to keep our nation free. A simple statement but one loaded with meaning. Think of the lives lived by those people. They had loves, likes, family and career interests. They had hopes and dreams like you and I. They were complete human beings with futures. And now, not. They are who we remember on this day.
But do we remember them? Do we truly honor their sacrifice? Do we dive into the meaning of freedom itself? Do we? Do I do this?
Not really, without being pulled into it intentionally, like this very moment. Well, here are my thoughts on this matter.
I have a brain, and I use it, most of the time. Sure, there are times I don’t use it, like when I obsess over personal things at the cost of other duties and obligations. Freedom is not always about self; it is focused much of the time on others. Being a parent pops to mind can others things they need to know to be self-managed and happy.
I have time to spend on interests that make my life exciting. I learn about these things in more detail so I can push into the future pursuing them and related interests. I discovered things I did not know, and expanded my abilities to do more, create more and serve more people. These are the things that focus my mind and give purpose to my life.
I have freedom of motion. I can walk, move my arms and legs. I can change position and place in which I inhabit. I can visit other places and examine what is there and what it means. I can interact with others in the same locations. I can be me with them as much as I am me at home.
I can feel both figuratively and literally. I sense texture, sound, temperature, movement of air. Yet, I can also sense emotional feelings. These may be the mosy t powerful of all. They help me realize happiness, anger, disappointment, love, caring as well as knowing.
I can just be. Sit and feel. Think. Ponder possibility. I may create music, ideas, movements, communications. I can actually create possibility to share with others.
I can be free to be more than I am right this moment. You can too. Each of us is free to be all that we can be. That may be the greatest freedom of all. Be. Explore. Become.
Let us remember this as we honor those who have fallen to give it all to each of us.
Happy Memorial Day!
